The Wilmot Proviso was a proposal introduced in 1846 to ban slavery in any territory acquired from Mexico after the Mexican-American War.
It passed the House of Representatives but failed in the Senate, highlighting the growing sectional divide over slavery.
Although it never became law, the Wilmot Proviso increased tensions between the North and the South.
