The Lincoln-Douglas Debates were a series of seven debates in 1858 between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas, who were running for the U.S. Senate in Illinois.
The main topic was slavery, with Lincoln opposing its expansion and Douglas supporting popular sovereignty.
Though Douglas won the Senate seat, the debates made Lincoln a national figure and helped him during the Election of 1860.
