John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry was an attempt to start a slave rebellion.
He and a small group of followers attacked a federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), hoping to arm enslaved people.
The raid failed after U.S. Marines, led by Colonel Robert E. Lee, captured Brown and his men.
