The Compromise of 1850 was a set of five laws meant to ease tensions between free and slave states after the Mexican-American War.
It allowed California to enter the Union as a free state and let other territories decide on slavery through popular sovereignty.
It also included a stricter Fugitive Slave Law, which angered many Northerners and increased division between the North and South.
