The Gadsden Purchase was an 1854 agreement in which the United States bought a strip of land from Mexico for $10 million, adding parts of present-day southern Arizona and New Mexico. The purchase aimed to facilitate the construction of a southern transcontinental railroad and resolved lingering border disputes following the Mexican-American War.
