Henry was born in 1815 Maryland, already born into slavery he capitalized on his opportunity in 1824 to escape and secure his freedom. Garnet made two voyages to cuba in 1828 and in 1829 on his return he learned that his family separated to hopefully escape slave catchers.

His famous radical speech in 1843 urged the enslaved to rebel against their masters.In 1859 he founded the African Civilization Society. In February 12, 1865, He became the first black person to deliver a sermon in the House of Representatives
