The Kansas-Nebraska Act was allowed settlers in those territories to decide for themselves whether to allow slavery, using popular sovereignty.
It effectively repealed the Missouri Compromise, which had banned slavery north of the 36°30′ line.
The act led to violence in Kansas, known as “Bleeding Kansas,” and increased tensions between pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups.
